  • What About House Reef Diving?

Maldivian islands are generally surrounded by a lagoon, delimited by a house reef. The possibility of diving the house reef depends on the size of the lagoon, it's accessibility through the coral barrier and the strength of the currents around it. A house reef suitable for recreational diving is often an inner reef (safe access and less risky currents) and offers a plus for photographers, training or for doing a few extra dives at odd times. Some of the islands we operate in the Maldives have a fantastic house reef - Vilamendhoo and Eriyadu. Other islands which have good house reef diving to offer are: Velidhu island and Kurumba.

  • Maldives, A Coral paradise Or A Fish Paradise?

Experienced divers who have visited various destinations, like the Red Sea, the Caribbean or other dive paradises in South East Asia know that the spectacularly of the Maldivian coral reefs is different to many of those destinations. What makes diving especially interesting in the Maldives is the rich and varied fish life and the fact that the animals you encounter do not show any fear of divers.

Very few destinations can provide visitors the unforgettable experience of being that close to exciting wild creatures of the deep without harm for neither the animal nor the visitor. Wondering at the turtles busy eating undisturbed by your nearness, hanging weightless in the deep while a school of mantas glide above you, the rush of adrenaline while being amidst tens of gray reef sharks hunting for prey, the feeling of disbelief as you encounter a whale shark. That is a kind of closeness to nature most people miss in their everyday lives. That is the reason why many prefer diving in Maldives.

  • How Is Diving Conducted In The Maldives?

Diving is mostly conducted from small local wooden boats called Dhoanis, although some islands now use modern fiberglass versions and in some cases speedboats for smaller groups. The boats generally drift, following the divers. In some dive sites the boat is tied up, but never anchored.

  • Are decompressions Chambers Available In The Maldives?

DAN operates a chamber in Bandos with German specialists. The facility is state of the art. TMA and Air Taxi (seaplanes) provide emergency transportation between atolls. Both are private companies and rather expensive. Another good reason to make sure you have a good insurance. Since March 2000, Universal Enterprises operates a second chamber and clinic at Kuramathi Tourist Resort, covering the area of North Ari Atoll.

  • Are There Any Local Dive Regulations?

The Maldives Government issued a set of diving regulations over ten years ago, after consultations between the Ministry of Tourism and the Dive Operators. After new consultations have taken place in the last years, reviewed regulations were published in early 2001.

    Maldivian regulations cover:

    • Minimum certification levels for staff
    • Orientation dive and dive supervision
    • Accepted certifications
    • Depth limitation
    • Equipment requirements
    • Boat and Dive Center standards
    • Equipment maintenance

A copy of the unofficial translation issued by the Ministry of Tourism in 2001 is on display at all our Dive Centres in Maldives.

  • Do I Need A Wetsuit?

Water temperature ranges between 26-30 Celsius in Maldives, with an average around 28. It is fine to do a few dives without a wetsuit but 3mm shorties are available for rental on all islands as well as 3mm full suits for added comfort. They are also available for sale on most islands. If you want to bring your own, anything thicker than 5mm is likely to have more negative than positive effects.

  • Do I Need A Medical Certificate To Dive With Euro-Divers?

A medical certificate is not mandatory if you are generally in good health. You will have to fill in a form, which asks some specific questions about your health. The purpose of this medical questionnaire is to find out if you should be examined by a physician before participating in recreational diving. A positive response means that there is a pre-existing condition that may affect your safety while diving and you must seek the advice of a physician. It is easier and cheaper if you do this at your home place, however it may also be possible at some destinations (difficult and expensive in some cases). It is strongly recommended to submit to a medical once a year if you practice Scuba diving.

Note: Diving medicine is a speciality and a medical certificate from a non specialist may be refused if it allows diving against international praxis. You can download here some guidelines for the examination that you can give to your doctor if he/she is not a diving specialist. Please visit the following web site for more detailed information on specific medical conditions and diving: www.diversalertnetwork.org

Note 2: At Club Med Resorts with a resident doctor, he/she has the final decission on issues related to medical conditions and diving.
